EPISODE 5: Breaking Free from Pre-Packaged Healthcare : Acupuncture

Time: 06/09/2009 09:00 PM EDT

The mainstream mentality says that you need prescription drugs to be healthy and the Dr. knows what is best for you.

I ask: “Is that true??

Explore the possibilities of acupuncture as a means of staying healthy and healing yourself with out drugs.

Our “expert” is: PJ Steyer, Lic.Ac., M.A.O.M. Chinese and Japanese Acupuncture Chinese Herbal Medicine.

PJ says, “After a back injury, I was in a great deal of pain and could barely move. I was being encouraged to have surgery, but I wanted to try acupuncture before it came to that. I was just amazed with the results. Every time I had a treatment, I felt a little better, and after a few months, I was completely cured! I decided then to study to become an acupuncturist myself.”

PJ is a graduate of the New England School of Acupuncture, the nation’s oldest college of Oriental Medicine, where he concentrated in Chinese and Japanese Acupuncture Styles, as well as Chinese Herbal Medicine. He had specialized rotations in Geriatrics, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, and OB/GYN clinics in addition to General clinical rotations, and was awarded the Tsay Fellowship – given to a member of NESA’s graduating class who is believed to have the most potential to positively advance the profession of Oriental Medicine, for his research project on acupuncture for children with autism.

Also a martial artist, PJ is a master in the traditional Korean art of Soo Bahk Do, which he began studying in 1986. He is a 5th degree “midnight blue belt” (Soo Bahk Do uses a Midnight Blue Belt which is equivalent to a “Black Belt” in other styles), and has been teaching since 1991. He fulfilled a childhood dream by opening his own school, Boston Classical Soo Bahk Do, in 2001. PJ has twice undergone the most rigorous testing procedure in the martial arts, the eight-day-long “Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa,” and is a Certified Master Instructor (Sa Bom).

PJ has also traveled extensively in order to enrich his study of the Soo Bahk Do martial arts system. He has trained under dozens of masters from all across the United States and in Great Britain. He has also trained for over a year at the international Moo Duk Kwan headquarters while living in Seoul, South Korea. Before he became an acupuncturist, PJ worked in the field of Special Needs for 12 years. He is a 1999 graduate of Brown University with a B.A. in English and American Literature.

Why is PJ a good fit for Defy the Box Radio?

PJ says:I am a wanderer and a student at heart – i love to learn from new experiences, and to make them my own. It is that spirit that led me to drive cross-country and live out of my car for seven months, to live in South Korea for a year, and to attend Burningman. From being a music/drama geek in high school to being a raver with pink pigtails in my early 20s, I have turned my sense of adventure and uniqueness into a personal philosophy that reflects the values of courage, choice, and openness. I no longer have multichromatic hair, but I have an ear piercing for every life-changing event in my life. I no longer drive off for months at a time, but I view the process of putting down roots as being similar in purpose to that of spreading out branches. I am a firm believer in the ability of people to blaze their own trails in life, not just in terms of what they do, but in how they think about what they do.

Episode 10 : What is Energy Work and What Can it Do for Me?

During this weeks discussion we will be exploring how to use Universal energy as a means of healing. Everything is made up of energy. The same energy runs through all material things and makes up our emotions and feelings. It effects our pyhsical and mental health, as well as out prosperity and happiness.

Reiki is a means of harnessing this Universal energy to heal yourself and others.

Reiki is different than some other alternative healing modalities

in that it is non-denominational, it is attached to no doctrine

of any religion, and you are energetically shifted with the attunement

,or what some call the initiation, to each level of Reiki that you

learn about; The vibration of your physical body changes .

Are you curious about this?

Come join in the discussion.

My guests will be:

Mariclaire Hession has been a conscious source for universal healing since the year 2000. As a certified Reiki Master Teacher she consciously works with the universe to help funnel it’s gifts to living beings around the world so that they may peel off the layers of forgetting and remember that fire that we all have within us.

” I have found Reiki to be a remembering

of all of the wisdom from each of our soul manifestations.

I say to people that Reiki helps us remember how incredible we are.

I find this to be the truest essence of Reiki.

Reiki guides us forward in our paths as humans easily so that we may move thru our human lessons with the grace and ease of our own boundless wisdom.

This is not something you can read in a book or go to school to learn,

it is the emergence of your soul’s truth, your center and how that

shapes who you remember yourself to be.”

My name is Kimberly Coleman , I love energy work in all forms. There are many different types of energy work and each one works on our energy system differently.

We are all beings made up of a complex energy system. Energy is the common medium of the body, mind and soul. Energy is the foundation of your health Energy is also your body’s fuel. Our bodies energy systems are our Meridians ( our body’s energy pathways) and Chakras ( our energy centers). When theses pathways and centers become clogged or blocked is when our energy system starts to break down. That when we start to break down and get sick.

I have been a Massage Therapist -Energy Healer /Light Worker for the past 15 years. I practice Reiki Healing, Polarity Therapy, Chakra work. I also do some hands on bodywork that is meridian based like Acupressure and Reflexology. I infuse Aromatherapy with all my work. I have come to learn that everything is connected. You can learn more about the work Kim does here: http://www.luvmassage.com [email protected]

Episode 16: Decorating Your Temple: Sacred Body Modification

10/27/09

Abraham Street is back!

There is beauty and power in intentionally changing the way one is perceived by others. Whether it’s putting on a ball gown and makeup, drawing a symbol on your left thigh every morning, piercing your lips to remind yourself to speak only truth, or surgically altering your appearance to be more in line with your gender identity, there are more ways to practice the art of body modification than getting a tattoo – although those can be powerful as well.

Abraham is known for creating and priesting body spirituality rituals and engaging in personal transformation through various forms of changing perceptions of the self. He will share his professional experiences with various forms of temporary, long term, and permanent sacred body modifications. A great discussion for people who are considering some form of modification, people who have modified their body in some way, or those who are interested in the practice.

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/defythebox/2010/02/24/the-executive-hobo-life-on-the-road-with-a-couple-of-swordswallowers

Alex Kensington and Charon Henning are living the life of the Executive Hobo, with health, success well before what one would consider retirement age. They live full time on the road in their 1966 Airstream trailer, using their time and resources to live the life that they wish for themselves and taking every opportunity to help other understand that they, too, can live in this fashion, if only they would let go of the notions they have of what it takes to have such a lifestyle.

Bio:

“After several attempts to fit in conventional lifestyles and living and being thwarted or deceived at every turn, I have made the conscience decision to abandon all hope for the former American Dream, and have evolved one of my own invention.
I have decided to stop beating my head against the wall, have seat and enjoy the shade. My technique involves the following:
To eschew responsibility to, severely limit my participation in a system that fails, or refuses to serve me even when all expectations and duties are met.

The reason why this is not simply dropping out or is a cope out is that there really isn’t a carrot at the end of the stick that conventional society dangles in front of me. If there was I would be guilty of such a cope out.

But currently The American Dream seems to have shifted from setting to escape. And so instead of Mortgage I have now an Airstream. Instead of property tax over which I have no control even by the polling booth, I now pay gasoline tax and only when I consume it.”ALEXANDER KENSINGTON

Charon Henning lives and works from the road. Living full time in a 22’ 1966 Airstream Safari with partner Alex Kensington, she roams the U.S. plying her skills of tattooing, illustration, writing and classic thrills artistry.

Charon started her tattooing career 17 years ago with her apprenticeship in 1993 in Allentown, PA, then as an artist in the Washington DC Metro Area and parts of Florida, gaining experience in a variety of tattooing styles and shop environments. Tattooing’s shamanic history was always of interest to Charon and she has had the opportunity to work for a variety of events and organizations as a ritual tattoo artist. Her consistency, both artistically and in temperament have earned her a loyal client base as diverse as her tattooing style. She currently holds a permanent chair at Marlowe Ink in Fairfax, VA and is well on the way to becoming a firmly established guest artist in parts of Florida, Alabama, Texas, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Missouri.

Charon is an accomplished illustrator in pen and ink and colored pencil and a sculptor in mixed media. She has an Associate’s Degree in Fine Art and a Bachelor’s Degree from George Mason University’s Individualized Studies program, earning a faculty award for Most Creative Final Project. She also writes regularly for her own website at www.oddangel.com, for the Airstream Life social network and provides a monthly column for www.intoxicatedzodiac.com.

In addition to her artistic and writing skills Charon is also a nationally-known variety arts performer. Swallowing swords, eating fire and walking on broken glass are all in a day’s work for the woman billed as The Most Dangerous Beauty Alive. She has been featured in Shocked & Amazed! Magazine and is included in author Amelia Klem Osterud’s book on tattooed female performer

Have you ever watched Hollywood stylists give fashion advice? “Wear this, don’t’ wear that,” they say, and you wonder who on earth they are talking to!

Do you feel like you are regularly bombarded by advice (welcome and unwelcome) about what to wear and yet you are still confused (or feel like you don’t fit in)?

Does formulaic dressing feel boring or unappealing?

Leah & Beth are joined by Sabrina Mari and Cat Castells of Godhooks to discuss how they use the power of myth,to create trans-formative experiences that inspire individuals and communities to align action with spirit. Godhooks’ mission: Through the power of myth, we create transformative experiences that inspire individuals and communities to align action with spirit. http://turtlehillevents.org/godhooks/ Our name is drawn from the ancient mythologies that inspire our work. We depend on the wisdom of many spiritual paths, hooking into particular themes, and recombining their insights in new ways to create workshops that inspire reflection and rebirth. Godhooks is a collective of presenters and their support people who work within the Godhooks mission to present workshops supporting alternative lifestyles and religions. They are led by founders Sabrina Mari and Cat Castells.
